The Merrick Fell Race - Saturday 17th September 2016

2016 Nichola Jackson climbing Merrick Hill - 17.9.16The last in the 2016 series of the British fell running championships took place at Glen Trool in SW Scotland last week. One race is held in each of the four home countries of the UK with different races chosen each year.
The final race was in wonderfully isolated hill country, in part of the Galloway hills and over a mixture of terrain; from steep ground and a steep initial climb from the off, to good mountain paths, and over some extremely tough ground to finish. The route was 12.4k and 750m of climb on a very warm and humid afternoon.
Nichola Jackson needed a high placing to ensure a medal in the overall championship and an excellently paced run for 2nd lady in 1:38.40 meant she finished 3rd in the series. 1st lady was Lou Roberts of Ambleside in 1:36.46.
The winner was Rhys Findlay-Robinson of Dark Peak Fell Runners in 1:16.03. There were 197 finishers and the race usually attracts about 30 runners
