Pendle Three Peaks Fell Race - Saturday 20th August 2016

The English Fell Championship fell running series had a local feel last Saturday, when as one of the two medium distance races, the relatively new Pendle Three Peaks fell race was picked as a counter.
It is a category A race, so with a distance of 10 miles and 2,920 feet of climb, it was always going to be a tough event, but it was more so, because of the strong wind and spells of driving rain. Fortunately, the earlier hill fog largely lifted as some of the terrain is quite featureless.
The ladies race started fifteen minutes before the men and the leaders were not caught until the final ascent up to Pendle Hill from checkpoint 6 beyond Downham Moor. Nichola Jackson had a wonderful race, finishing 2nd in 1:35.04, behind Sharon Taylor (Helm Hill Runners) but she`s now moved to the head of the English Championship table and it will be down to who needs to complete the last long race in October, at Langdale for the medals.
The men’s race was won by Sam Tosh of Rossendale Harriers in 1:15.41 whilst for Preston, Steve Bamber was 133rd in 1:45.46 & Michael McLoughlin finished in 1:57.05.

Nichola Jackson led the charge, finishing in a very fast 2: 14:42 and continuing her successes this season with a 3rd place finish in her age group and 14th overall. Steve Bamber (2:14:42) led home the men with Kevin Hunt (2:19:50), Billy Johnstone (2:25:25) and Michael Brennand (2:47:20) completing a fine day’s performance from the Harriers triathletes.
