Helvellyn Triathlon - Sunday 4th September 2016
Four intrepid Harriers ventured up to Glenridding in the Lake District on Sunday, to compete in what is known as one of the toughest triathlons in the world.
The Helvellyn Triathlon starts with a 1 mile swim in Ullswater, followed by a 38 mile cycle loop which returns via the infamous ‘Struggle’ to the 1,489 feet summit of the Kirkstone Pass, followed by a formidable 9 mile run to the 3,118 feet summit of Helvellyn, which includes a scramble up the rocky ridge of Swirral Edge for good measure! The route heads back down to the spectator packed village to finish next to the lake.
After a misty start, prompting safety fears for the competitors, the clouds lifted and the race went ahead unabated with Nichola Jackson leading the team home in 4:23:54 and finishing a superb 2nd Female, despite a double puncture, with Steve Needham (4:49:24) Billy Johnstone (5:05:34) and Michael Brennand (6:46:06) all enjoying the reward for their efforts of the stunning views afforded from the top of what is the third highest peak in England, and the satisfaction of taking on and completing the challenge of endurance this gruelling event provides.
