Fell Running
The Fell Championship races for 2008 have been posted in the Fell pages. See here for more details.
For the final and always very popular last race of the year in the fell running calendar, a number of Harriers took part in the Auld Lang Syne fell race from Penistone Country Park, near Haworth. 471 runners completed the race over 6 mile route with 900` of ascent. George Arnold of Preston Harriers set a new course record for the Vet 70 age group with a time of 70:07. Will Garner was highest placed for Harriers with 96th in a time of 51:49. Steve Bamber was 121st in 53:02, whilst Dave Parkington was 128th in 53:12. John Griffiths completed in 53:37 for 136th, whilst Ash Nixon was 175th in 56:03.
In the final event of the 2007 Lakeland Trail race series Philippa Walsh was a good 3rd lady and first vet 40 over the 12k course from Howtown in 1:09.25. Janice Metcalf was 57th lady in 1:33.07. In the mens race, Alan Metcalf was 5th in 1:00.57 whilst Phil Walsh was 12th (1st vet 50) in 1:03.51. James Walsh was 30th in 1:08.12.
Bad weather and poor visibility on Saturday stretched our navigation skills as we followed the course around these rolling hills about 35 miles south of Glasgow.
An all night storm kept us tucked up in our tent at the overnight camp site where we got little sleep and lots of teams dropped out. Sunday was a fine day so less navigating and more speed as we headed back to the finish.
