Preston Harriers Sportshall League Champions

In the final event of the 2005/6 Lancashire Sportshall Athletics League season, Preston Harriers’ young athletes were victorious again in the 3rd and final meeting of the season and in doing so they secured the league title.

The U15 Boys team of Jonathan Harker (21 points), Mark Sutton(18), Matthew Bugler (16) and Ivan Kilroe (14) amassed a total of 74 points of the 119 points in this age group. They later also convincingly won the relay.

Harriet James, Vicky Sparks, Lucy Sumner and Katrina Hall were equally dominant in winning the U15 girls’ relay. In the individual events, Harriet won the 2-lap in a new club record time of 23 secs. She also won the standing long jump (2.25m) and speed bounce and was equal first in the vertical jump. Vicky was the athlete that matched Harriet’s vertical jump. She then had to settle for second place behind Harriet in the 2-lap and standing long jump. Her efforts earned her the U15 girls’ athlete-of-the-match award, as Harriet was ineligible as a previous season winner. Lucy, who won the 4-lap race and had two third places, and Katrina, with three third places, also contributed valuable points.

Only two seconds behind the U15 girls relay team were the impressive winning Preston Harriers U13 girls’ relay team of Hannah Lupton, Charlotte Newby, Sophie Ealand and Amy Lupton. Charlotte won the athlete-of-the-match award this time in this age group, setting a new club record to win the U13 girls’ vertical jump with a leap of 58cm. She also had three second places. Hannah won the standing long jump (2.16m) and shot putt (6.73m), Sophie won the 2-lap (23.6s) and 4-lap races (51.3s) and Amy Lupton contributed a valuable 15 points from a second place, two third places and a fifth place from her four events. Also scoring useful points for the U13 girls were Lucy Salisbury, Lauren Bugler and Stephanie Wiggans.

The U11 girls’ obstacle relay team of Alexandra Livesey, Emma Davies, Emily Lupton and Gemma Coleman won their event. Alexandra won three events and came second in her fourth event. In winning the vertical jump she broke cousin Charlotte Newby’s U11 record of 52 cm with a new best of 54 cm for this age group. Jodie Salthouse set a new club record in the 20-second speed bounce of 59 bounces. Emily Lupton won the soft javelin event with a throw of 15.5m, just half a metre short of the club record of 16m, set by her sister Amy last year, and Emily still has another year in the U11’s. Emma Davies continued to show what an exciting young athlete she is, with a total of 16 points, from two second places, a third place and a fifth place. She will be in the U11’s for another two seasons!

Ryan Cooper (24 points) who won the athlete-of-the-match award and Joseph O’Donnell (23 points) led the U11 boys’ team. Ryan set a new club record in winning the speed bounce with a total of 61 bounces in 20 seconds. He also won the 1-lap race in a time of 12.7 secs. Joseph just beat him to win the 2-lap race in 25.3 secs and later also won the 4-lap race in 55.6 secs.

Record Breaking Win for Preston Harriers

In the second meeting of the 2005/6 Lancashire Sportshall League season Preston Harriers scored another emphatic victory and five club records were bettered in the process. Preston Harriers now have 20 match points (total aggregate score 796 points) and Blackpool & Fylde 18. To knock Preston off the top spot therefore Blackpool now need to win the last event and hope Preston are pushed into 4th position.

On the track Harriet James improved the U15 girls 2-lap record with a time of 23.1 seconds and Lucy Sumner beat the 4-lap record with a time of 49.6 seconds. Jacob Weir set a new record in the U11 boys 2-lap with a time of 24.2 seconds.

In the field events new club records were set by Joshua Ingham, in winning the U11 boys sitting ball throw with a throw of 7.75m, and by Georgina Cameron, who won the U11 girls speed bounce with 56 bounces in 20 seconds.

Other Preston Harriers’ athletes who made contributions to the overall result included, U15 boys: Jonathan Harker (26 points), George Sharp (15), Andrew Harrison (12.5), Mark Sutton (7) and Matthew Bugler (5.5). U15 girls: Rebekah Ingham (22), Lucy Sumner (17), Katrina Hall (12), Helen Sharp (7), Cheyenne Atkinson (2) and Fiona Mackenzie (1).

In the U13 girls Amy Lupton scored 17.5 points, Nichola Jackson (16) and Sophie Ealand (13). The main points contributions in the U11 girls came from Georgina Cameron (18), Emily Lupton (16.5) and Emma Davies (13.5). And in the U11 boys Jacob Weir scored 24 points, Joseph O’Donnell (22), Ryan Cooper and Joshua Ingham (14) and Jonathan Heap (10.5).

Harriet James won the athlete-of-the-match award in the U15 girls with a maximum 28 points, and Alexandra Livesey) won the U11 with a total of 23 points.

In the first match of the 2005/6 Lancashire Sportshall Athletics season on Sunday 6th November 2005 at Blackpool Leisure Centre, Preston Harriers' young athletes set out a daunting challenge to the other clubs involved. In winning the first match of the season Preston amassed a total of 413 points,157 points more than their closest rivals Blackpool & Fylde AC.  More than 100 athletes from seven Lancashire clubs and Holy Cross School, Chorley competed in a fun and friendly atmosphere, typified by the cheers for the impromptu toddler's race.  There were many fine individual performances with places in the Lancashire Sportshall teams up for grabs in the U11's inter-counties regional Sportshall Athletics due at the end of November.  There was also a chance for some of the older athletes to make an impression early in the season for consideration for the U13 & U15 Lancashire teams, which will compete in their inter-counties competition early in the New Year. Preston Harriers gained five of the six athletes of the match awards. Rebecca Ingham and Jonathan Harker led the way in the U15's winning all their events. Rebecca gained a maximum 28 points in the 2-lap, 4-lap, vertical jump and shot, whilst Jonathan gained his maximum in 2-lap, standing long jump, triple-jump and shot. Hannah Lupton won athlete of the match in U13 girls with 26 points. Hannah won the 2-lap, standing long jump and shot. She also gained a very close second place behind Beth Towers of Blackpool in the 4-lap who caught her just as they crossed the finish line together. Anthony Brooke won the U13 boys athlete of the match with 251/2 points gained from the speed bounce, shot, standing long jump and 2-lap.  In the U11 boys, two Preston athletes, Jacob Weir and Joseph O'Donnell tied for Athlete of the Match on 24 points. Jacob gaining his points from 1-lap (5), 2-lap (7), 4-lap (7) and vertical jump (5). Joseph's points coming in the 1-lap (7), 2-lap (5), 4-lap (5) and speed bounce (7).  Joanna Olive of Blackpool and Fylde AC won the final athlete of the match award in the U11 girls' section. Alexandra Livesey of Preston Harriers, with a massive leap of 52cm, won the vertical jump, and in doing so equalled cousin Charlotte Newby's U11 girls' club record.
