Congratulations to Mile Manley Miles Manley, who has been awarded The J.W.Turner Memorial Trophy by the North of England Athletic Association for Best performance in the under 17 mens championship. He won the 100m Hurdles race in 13.23 beating the rest of the field by a full second. ESAA Finals Derby Four Preston Harriers made the short journey to Derby last weekend to represent Lancashire in English Schools Combined Finals. The most prestigious Combines competition in the Schools athletic calendar. The most successful representative was Intermediate Girl, Eleanor Markendale who represents Preston as a second choice club. She finished 4th after her seven events with a fantastic points score of 4381 just 389 points behind 1st place. Her hard work gains her a Junior England vest and she will now represent England Schools in Glasgow in December. Runshaw College student and Senior boy Andrew Robinson gained another 5 pb’s on his way to 20th place after ten events with a total point’s score of 5380. As a lower age group representative he will be hoping to improve on this next season after a hard winters training with his North West Combines Squad colleagues at Sports City. Penwortham Girls High School student and Junior Girl Harriet James finished in a respectable 17th place after 5 events total points 2613 then discovered that she had been competing with a broken wrist. Harriet moves up into Intermediate Girls next year and will no doubt be encouraging her Preston Harriers team mate Hannah Lupton to train hard with her over the winter to try again to represent Lancashire next year. North of England - Cudworth Steve Hallas finished second in the North of England 10.000 metre race held at Cudworth Yorkshire. In far from ideal conditions, running the 25 laps on a windy day, Steve was rewarded with a silver medal and also a pb 32.35, finishing this years track season on a high note SAAA Combined Events Championship Preston Harriers U11’s at Burnley

Lancs - Litherlad The penultimate meeting of the Mid Lancs Track & Field league meeting of 2006 was held at Litherland on 29 July 2006. Preston Harriers manage to hold on to first place in the women’s league but Blackpool cut the lead at the top to only 51 points. The men’s team came out of the meeting holding on to third place with hosts Southport & Waterloo just behind in fourth..more Young Athletes - Preston 23/07 In the final meeting of the 2006 UK Young Athletes Northern Premier League at Preston Sports Arena last weekend, Preston Harriers comfortably won their last match to confirm fifth place in the league...more NW Regional Combined Events Championships Report The North-West Regional Combined Events championships were held over the weekend of 25th and 26th June in Carlisle...more British Milers Club Nike Grand Prix - Solhull Last Saturday a group of Preston Harrier middle distance runners travelled down to Solihull to compete in the latest round of the British Milers Club Nike Grand Prix. Led by Helen Clitheroe running in the senior women’s 1500m A race Helen in her first 1500m of the season was just beaten into first place by her Great Britain team mate Jo Pavey. Helen chasing the European Qualifying time of 4.05 just missed out running 4.07.72, she now moves on to race in Greece next week were she will have another go at the time. Her training partner Catherine Riley ran a storming last 200m to finish 2nd in the women’s 800m A race in a new pb of 2.02.79. First up for the juniors was u/17 Nathan Bibby running in the 1500m although not in the race he wanted he led from start to finish to run a new pb of 3.59.44. Next up was u/20 Peter Street who ran a great race to run another pb of 4.01.38 knocking 3 seconds of his previous best. The final two runners were u/20 Steph Roe and u/17 Kate Hindle who both ran in the same 800m race with Steph running a great last 100m to just win it on the line in a seasons best of 2.10.12, with surely more to come this season, she just beat her training partner Kate who finished 2nd in another pb of 2.10.52. Overall a very successful nights racing with Helen sure to get the qualifying time over the next few weeks and the juniors now look forward to the highlight of their season the English Schools finals being held in Gateshead next weekend. North of England AA Under 20 & Senior Track & Field In the u/20 and senior North of England Championships, Preston Harriers had a good turn out. Preston Harriers athletes won 8 out of the 9 age categories in the Lancashire County & Lancashire Schools Combined Events Championship held at Preston last weekend. Harrier athletes won a total of 17 medals, 8 gold, 4silver and 5 bronze. A clean sweep of the Junior Boys Pentathlon with George Sharp taking gold with 1782 points only 1 point in front of team mate Mark Sutton with Anthony Brooke grabbing bronze. Michael Porter recovered from a disaster in the hurdles to clinch 4th spot. Harriers took their second clean sweep of the medals in the Boys Under 13’s Miniathlon with Sam Miller smashing the Championship Record with a points score of 64, Robert Gallery took silver and Joshua Ingham won bronze. Jacob Weir was 5th and Ryan Cooper 7th. The Girls were not to be out done when Intermediate Heptathletes also won Gold, Silver, and Bronze. Eleanor Markendale setting a new personal best points score of 4280 winning with Rebekah Ingham second 3654 and Catherine Cassidy third 3321. Rebecca Wiseman took gold in the Senior Ladies Heptathlon County Championship while Emma James took the equivalent Championship in the Schools’ Event. Andrew Robinson now concentrating on Combined Events took the Senior Boys Decathlon title in his first 10-event competition with a score of 4380. Grace Robertson took gold in the Junior Girls Pentathlon Championship with personal best, points total of 2329, Hannah Lupton with battling performance won bronze with 2283 points. Katie Mathers finished a creditable 4th. Amy Lupton won the under 13’s girls Miniathlon with 68 points with Katy Livesey 5th. Middle distance specialist Matthew Lloyd won silver in the Intermediate Boys Octathlon scoring 2809 points, while Leame Isherwood secured bronze with 2610 points. Performance of the weekend was Blackpool’s Hannah Dickson, last year’s English School’s Junior High Jump Champion and the country’s leading High Jumper for her age last year setting a new personal best of 1.70 metres on her way to the silver medal in the Junior Girls Pentathlon Championship. |
