Northern 12 stage - Heaton park, Manchester

Results - SportSoft

Having struggled to get 12 runners due to work commitments and injuries Dave Watson saved the day with only a few hours notice and Preston harriers turned in a great performance not only to qualify for the nationals but also finish in our highest position of 10th place finishing ahead of many bigger clubs.

1st leg saw Steve Hallas off to a good start 31.35 on a long leg of 9km  changing over  to Steve Smith in 26th position who having  a very sore back and hoping we had a reserve runner set off on a 5km leg with an great run pulling back 14 places in 16.47 to change over to Kevin Hesketh who ran 18.27 losing 2 places to hand over to Adam Sutton who flew round this hilly and windy course and running the second fastest leg 28.32 gaining 5 places to change over to Gary Wilson in 9th place who ran well gaining two places in 17.25 to hand over to Brian Dewhurst who also hoping for a reserve runner due to knee injury ran well holding 7th in 18.41 to see Matt Livingstone run a long leg in 31.50 keeping 7th position. David Barker making his debut to relays ran a great leg  in 17.55 being unfortunate to loose a place handing over to David Watson who wasn't expecting to be racing was pleased to run 18.53 to put us in 9th position last long leg saw Dave Parkington run a great leg in 31.44 to change over in 10 th place to Neil McDonald in 18.57 moving to 11th place hoping for a top 10 finish running the glory leg went to Ray Kenny who pulled us back to 10th with a time of 18.17

St Anne’s Fire Brigade 10mile - 5th March 2006

Preston Harriers Triumph

In the increasingly popular St Anne’s Fire Brigade 10mile road race, Adam Sutton raced home, 1minute 45 seconds ahead of his nearest rival. Considering that he had previously won the Hyndburn cross country only 24 hours earlier and that he only decided to enter the race on the journey there after an entry form was thrust into his hand by team mate Gary Wilson! (he was just going to have a training run in a different area) this result was all the more remarkable.

In the space of the 51.13 that it took Adam to complete 10 miles, the weather conditions varied from very cold and sunny, to snow showers, sleet, hailstones and back to sun again. Combined with an extreme headwind for much of the way back, this made the flat course extremely difficult to race. Nevertheless, obviously inspired by the winner, Adam was well supported in the team race by Gary Wilson, currently doing high mileage for his marathon debut, in 9th place (57.26) and a fast finishing John Winder in 10th place (58.08). Both Gary and John received awards for 2nd and 3rd placings in the men’s over 35 race which has just been introduced into road running.

Next home was Alan Metcalf in 15th place (59.09) with Billy Gardner (1.00.08) and the rapidly improving Dave Watson (1.01.01) in 21st and 29th place respectively.

On the ladies side, Anne Sweeney returned to competition after 3 months off following an operation, to win the over 45s race and 6th place woman(1.07.21) , with the Preston Harriers contingent being completed by Carole Shannon finishing in 1.24.59
