Parbold Winter Duathlon - Sunday 6th December 2015

With storms and flooding hitting the North West over the weekend, unsurprisingly a large number of events were cancelled. Those that did manage to go ahead were badly affected with road closures disrupting travel arrangements for those taking part. However, Preston Harriers Michael Brennand and Billy Johnstone had a slice of luck, with their chosen event, race 1 of the Winter Duathlon Series at Parbold, going ahead. The informal winter series consists of three rounds incorporating a challenging 18 mile, three lap ride around Parbold Hill followed by an undulating 5k run. The initial good conditions soon gave way to high winds and torrential rain, with a number of competitors withdrawing after two laps. Not so the gritty harriers, who despite both suffering mechanical issues on the bike leg toughed it out to the finish in 1:35:35 (Brennand) and 1:37:00 (Johnstone). Race 2 of this popular series is on January 10th 2016. Winter training continues at UCLan sports arena with intervals on Tuesday nights at 7pm and Running & Fitness Group, Wednesdays at 7:30pm. Meet at the start area by the track.

Liverpool XC – Saturday 28th November 2015

The Liverpool cross country at Sefton Park is one of the most anticipated events in the local calendar. The event is organised by British Athletics as it is part of the renowned annual cross challenge series with prize money.
The series seeks to develop opportunities for the country’s established and emerging athletes and to support the preparations of the very best senior athletes for international competition. The races are also the trials for the team selection for the European cross country championships, with the top five being awarded as of right a GB vest.
Over 2,500 took part as Sefton Park hosts both the Mid Lancs and Liverpool Leagues within all of the age-group races. The day was overcast with frequent rain showers as the day progressed, although fortunately the forecast strong winds didn`t come in until after the competition had ended.
The under 11s went first and they returned mud splattered which set the tone for the whole day. Conditions became slippery & challenging.

Preston 10 mile road race - Sunday 15th November 2015

Despite the poor weather conditions over the weekend, there was a bumper turnout for the 34th running of the popular Preston 10 mile road race, with nearly 500 runners lining up for the start. Preston Harriers David Rigby and Gary Pennington battled it out in the men’s race with Rigby taking the honours in 55:53, with Pennington close behind in 56:04. Matthew Thompson of Southport Waterloo rounded off the top three coming home in 56:13. In the ladies’ race Preston Harrier and Team GB Olympian Helen Clitheroe dominated proceedings and despite the high winds prevailing on the course finished first lady in a time of 58:18, just 13 seconds off the women's course record. Emma Crowe of Wrexham AC was second in 63:28 and Darwen Dasher Joanne Nelson was third in 63:53. At the presentation the winnners’ hampers provided by race sponsor Lawrence Hunt & Co Ltd proved very popular as well as the large selection of cakes for all the finishers to refuel with!

Derwentwater 10 mile race - Sunday 1st November 2015

2015 Preston Harriers at Derwentwater 10 - 1.11.15The Derwentwater 10 mile race was held for the fifty sixth time last Sunday, making it one of the longest continuous ten mile road races in the country. The race, organised very well by Keswick AC, starts in Keswick town centre. For this year, the course ending had been changed to keep it off a busy road into the town and the old finish outside Keswick school. The finish was in Portinscale and all competitors agreed that it felt, and was, much safer.
The weather was simply glorious; warm sunshine with temperatures nudging 16° C, and superb views across Derwentwater and to the mountain of Skiddaw beyond. The climbs were probably made that little bit harder because of the heat too…
A group of 13 Preston Harriers ran and first Harrier home was Richard Smith, 23rd, in 61.01; Richard was delighted to pick up a spot prize of a rucsac at the presentation afterwards. Andrew Grimshaw and Catherine Slater finished together in under 66 minutes, with Catherine being 4th lady. Alan Appleby was 2nd Vet 65 in 69.35 whilst Russell Codd posted 69.48. There were also good runs from Steve Mort, Charlotte Rawcliffe, Michael Brennand, Steve Needham, Steve Jackson, Sue Wickham, Helen Boyer & Kari Edwards.

Through The Villages road race - Sunday 1st November 2015

The roller coaster roads of Brinscall and White Coppice greeted the half dozen Preston Harriers to the annual 8.5 mile Through the Villages race. The steep ascent right at the start of the race challenged all the local athletes with just a small pack managing to stretch away. Fully recovered from his Berlin Marathon exploits Rob Affleck used the initial miles to settle into a steady pace and was joined at the sharp end of the race by the predacious Gary Pennington, who stayed in close contention throughout. Over the closing miles Affleck’s marathon strength was well utilised to attain a healthy lead which he did not relinquish to power through the line in 1st overall in 47.18. Pennington maintained his high cadence to fight off any late challenges to be rewarded with 2nd overall in a mighty 48.04. The Proud Harrier presence was further enhanced by Kevin Hunt (53.16 2nd MV45), David Watson (56.32) 5th MV45, Alan Martin (60.30 9th MV45) and the ever ebullient Billy Johnstone (60.47 8th MV50).
