What is training like?

Athletics games, sprints, jumps, relays and throws. This is a fun session, but learning the basics at the same time. There are opportunities to compete as part of a team, and to take part in Sportshall Athletics during the winter. Your performances are recorded throughout the year, and everyone gets a certificate and badge at the presentation disco.

For Under 15's

We prefer you not to specialize. General coaching sessions cover the basics of middle distance, sprints, hurdles, relays, long jump, high jump, triple jump, shot, hammer, discus and javelin. We run an induction group that involves 2 throws, 2 jumps, and 2 track sessions to coach basics and identify ability, before you move into more advanced groups.

Additional specialized coaching is available for athletes who want to progress further, and are 13 or over.
Awards are given at the end of the season, based on the years' performances.

All other Athletes

Training is aimed at beginners to seasoned athletes, from people aiming to improve running fitness to those who are aiming to take part in competative events. All welcome, sessions are varied and enjoyable! Advice and assistance offered by a coach and helpers.

See the coaching contacts elsewhere on this site.

Are there opportunities to compete?

There are a number of competitions for under 11's, and the Club enters four leagues which cater for young athletes (under 15's). In addition, there are many competitions you can enter as an individual, including County, Northern and National Championships.

The highlight for younger athletes is the Club Championships, with two days of competition in mid September.

Are Preston Harriers athletes successful?

Helen Clitheroe is the 2011 European Indoor 3000m champion. She also won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester. We have several international athletes and have had athletes compete at Olympic, World Championships and Commonwealth levels.

Both our Young Development teams are in the Northern Premier Divsion 1 the top league in the North and have been to National finals for the last 5 years. The Senior Team are reigning Northern Division 1 Champions. Our athletes regularly win medals at County Area and National Championships.

We also compete in the local Mid-Lancs Leagues for both Cross Country and Track, where there are opportunities for all athletes of 11+ to compete.

What equipment do I need?

A T-shirt and shorts, and on cooler evenings a track suit of some sort. A pair of trainers will do to begin with.

Eventually you may need spikes or other specialist shoes, and if you compete for the Club you will need a club vest at a cost of approximately £15.

During the summer (April to September) we meet at the UCLan Sports Arena on Tom Benson Way. See Training Nights for details of sessions.

When and Where do you meet?

During the winter, we run a variety of gym sessions at a number of local Schools for different age groups and on diferent nights. There is one suitable for you.

For endurance runners the main night throughout the year is on the track at 7.00 pm on Tuesdays.

Other specialist groups meet at various times all year round, and you can discuss your individual program with the event coaches who attend the general sessions.

What About Safety?

Preston Harriers have adopted the A.A.A. of England Child Protection Policy, and use Qualified Coaches who are subject to UK Athletics Code of Conduct. General sessions are supervised by experienced coaches registered and S.R.B. checked by Preston City Council. Preston Harriers have an anti - bullying policy and 2 child protection officers.
