Northern Cross Country Championships - Saturday 28th January 2012
Patrick Dever took the honours for Preston Harriers with a scintillating display of strong running to win the U15 boys race at the Northern Cross Country Championships last Saturday.
The event was held at Pontefract Park, home of the race-course and conditions were perfect, with just a light breeze and blue skies after a heavy overnight frost, which meant that the courses stayed relatively mud free.
The U15 boys ran one full 4000m lap and Patrick Dever showed his intentions by getting in the lead group right from the gun. That group very soon only included four runners as they headed out towards the furthest reaches of the course. Dever made his move for victory with about 800m left and surged clear and ran with determination up the final hill into the finish straight to earn victory in 14.47, ahead of 2nd placed Elliot Bowker (Vale Royal – 14.58.) It was a well deserved success and, with the squad packing in well behind, really pushing hard for places in the final run in, the U15 boys secured a wonderful team 2nd, and silver medals. Eliott Roberts was 22nd, Chris Durney 40th and Luke Penswick 46th and they were fully supported by Dan Whitlock who ran well for 94th
The first race had been the U17 women over 5k, with Rachael Scott 38th in 19.53, Laura Sulliven 52nd in 20.24 & Jessica McDermott 67th in 21.06. In the U20 womens` race, Nichola Jackson running 5.6k, was 14th in 21.48. Elisha Lytlle (84th) & Meg Beckett (99th) ran the 3.1k U13 girls race. Dean Tierney, I13 boys, had a good run, 13th in 11.49 over 3.1k with Ethan Darr 88th and Liam McDermott 145th Sandy Kelly was the lone Harriers` runner in U17 at 6.1k placing a fine 33rd in 21.08
The senior women covered 8k being led in by Claire McDermott in 87th with runs from Marian Hesketh, Emma Essex-Crosby & Judith Deakin. Sadly, Philippa Walsh had to pull out with injury as she was warming up. Lizzie Adams of Hallamshire Harriers won in 30.40. The senior men ran a huge 12k (8 miles) and Jon Green was first home for Preston in 47.39, and there were runs from Michael O’Donnell, Tony Livesey, Kevin Hesketh, Alan Durney, Phil Walsh and Steve Jackson.
